  1. 8-10 Catla fish pieces
  2. as required Few pieces of boiled potatoes (big cuts)
  3. as required Few cauliflower
  4. 1 grated onion
  5. 1/1/2 chopped tomatoes
  6. 2 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  7. as required Turmeric powder,
  8. As per taste Salt
  9. 1/2 tsp sugar (optional)
  10. as required Oil
  11. 2 tsp coriander powder
  12. 1 tsp cumin powder
  13. 1/4 tsp garam masala powder
  14. as per taste Red chilli powder
  15. as required Few curry leaves
  16. as required Warm water,
  17. Khada masalas
  18. 1/2 tsp Jeera
  19. 1 black cardamom
  20. 2 green cardamom
  21. 1 cinnamon stick
  22. 1 bay leaf
  23. 1-2 dried red chillies

Instructions to make to make Bengali Fish Curry

  1. First wash the pieces of fish, add some salt and turmeric powder to them. Coat them well and fry them 60 to 70 percent. Keep them aside.
  2. Now shallow fry the potato and cauliflower pieces too & keep them aside.
  3. Now in the same pan, add some more oil. Heat it, then add all the khada masalas mentioned above like jeera, cinnamon sticks, green cardamom, black cardamom, dried red chillies, bay leaf & curry leaves. Let everything splutter a bit.
  4. Then add chopped tomatoes and slit green chillies and cook until it turns little mushy, now add ginger-garlic paste and cook for one more minute.
  5. Then add grated onion to it and mix it well. Now cook the masala on a low flame for 2 to 3 mins. Then add all the dry masalas like turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder, salt and sugar and combine everything well with the masalas. Now let the masalas cook on a low flame until oil starts leaving from the masalas.
  6. Once the masala gets fried, add 2 cups of warm water into it. Mix it well; let the water come to a boil, then add the fried pieces of fish in it. Gently give everything a good mix. Check the salt at this stage. Now cover the pan and let it cook on a low flame for 10 to 12 mins.
  7. In between open the lid and put all the stir-fried veggies in the curry. (potatoes & cauliflower pieces) (Refer to step 2).
  8. Now open the lid and add some garam and give it a final mix. Then cook for 1 more minute. Finally garnish it with some chopped coriander and serve it hot with some steamed rice.
